Activities in Aspen, CO

Aspen, one of Colorado's most wonderful year-round resort areas, is situated at the upper end of the Roaring Fork Valley and the Roaring Fork River. With a pleasant climate, beautiful scenery, challenging outdoor recreation, and abundant cultural activities, Aspen is a place for everyone. Aspen is world renowned for its downhill skiing and advanced mountain terrain. Its unique location offers plenty of outdoor activities and non-stop events during both summer and winter!

Skiing

The Aspen area offers four resort mountains, each with its own unique features and required skill sets. With a majority of the mountains focusing on intermediate to advanced skiing, Aspen is the true pinnacle of skiing.

Biking

Challenging terrain and awesome outlooks define the Aspen wilderness areas. Aspen has plenty of mountain biking and road biking trails that range from beginner to advanced, including trails to the popular Maroon Bells.

Hiking

Most of Aspen is wilderness, with hundreds of hiking trails. From lakes to rivers to mountain peaks, trails can take hours or days to complete. Aspen is truly a hiker's paradise!

Horseback Riding

Aspen outfitters offer regular tours and horseback riding trips. Because of the steep and difficult terrain of the Aspen mountains, horseback may be your preferred method to explore the popular vistas and peaks overlooking the valley.

  • Master of the Mass

    July 12-14

    This Four-stage Enduro Mountain Bike Race includes a variety of terrain including a chainless downhill, cross-country, downhill and super-downhill stages. The ultimate challenge -- all racers must choose one bike to race on for all disciplines. Parties and events will surround the weekend of mountain biking in one of the most beautiful settings in the Rockies.

  • Power of Four Trail 50k

    August 4

    This brand new 50k trail running race will cover each of the four Aspen/Snowmass mountains. The race will begin at the base of Aspen Mountain, peak at the Sundeck and follow single/double-track trails through Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass before finishing at Snowmass Base Village

  • Summer of Free Music Series at Snowmass

    Thursday nights, June–August

    This very popular free concert series draws crowds by the thousands to a comfortable outdoor venue with a spectacular mountain backdrop. Bring a blanket or low lawn chair and a picnic basket for the ultimate al fresco concert experience. Beer and wine are available for purchase at inexpensive prices, and so are delicious small bites from the grill. Added bonus: A Family Fun Zone entertains kids with a bouncy house, face painting, juggling and more

    Saturday Classical Music on the Mountain

    Saturday nights, July–August

    You may consider classical music an “elevated art form,” but you probably didn’t have this in mind. Relax at 11,000 feet at Aspen Mountain in a glorious meadow overlooking Mt. Hayden as students from the world-renowned Aspen Music Festival & School perform a dynamic repertoire. Bring a picnic (available at the Sundeck) or a lawn chair and enjoy the free performances just a short walk out Richmond Ridge from the top of the gondola.

    Bluegrass Sundays

    Sunday nights, July–September

    A favorite among locals, Sundays feature top bluegrass musicians from around Colorado performing in this idyllic Rocky Mountain setting. The free open-air concerts are held from noon to 3pm on Sundays just outside the Sundeck (on top of Aspen Mountain). The lineup varies each week.
